Discover Lisbon’s pretty streets
Hilly and compact, Lisbon is a picturesque maze of cobbled streets, stairs and pastel-coloured buildings. Quaint shops decorated with Portugal’s famous azulejos tiles, laidback wine bars and galleries are all within easy reach. Wash down a plate of grilled sardines with a drop of Ginjinha (cherry liqueur) or tour the sites on tram 28 for the quintessential Lisbon experience.
Explore the Algarve’s caves and coast
Portugal’s southern coast is no secret – Europeans have been flocking to its golden beaches to sun and surf for years. The Atlantic Ocean has carved some pretty spectacular caves into towering limestone cliffs just off the coast. Drop anchor to tour the caves, then explore some of the region’s lesser-known attractions like the gorgeous wetlands of Ria Formosa Natural Park.
Uncover the past in Coimbra
While not as well-known as Oxford or Cambridge, Coimbra is home to one of Europe’s oldest universities and a glorious past, a former playground of kings. Climb Alcacova hill to get to Coimbra’s historic heart where Roman relics, medieval covenants and cathedrals all reside. Perched on top of the hill is the city’s crowning glory – the University of Coimbra and its baroque library.
